ETAS®
is a patented, enzyme-processed extract of asparagus rhizomes with stress-reducing and sleep-enhancing properties. This plant extract, with a proprietary manufacturing process, is made from the terminal, lower part of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) which has stress-reducing and sleep-enhancing properties.

ETAS is the world’s first extract whose mechanism of action involves triggering the release of heat shock protein HSP70 (Heat Shock Protein 70), normally produced by the body in response to the stress of exposure to excessive heat. This effect is similar to the effects of bathing in hot springs, whose action delays the aging process and relieves stress. ETAS® has shown other beneficial effects, such as improving heart rate variability, improving cognitive abilities and lowering fatigue. ETAS® is rich in compounds known as hydroxymethylfurfural derivatives, which have been identified as new compounds that can induce HSP70 expression (Ito, 2013). One such compound included in ETAS® is a derivative known as asfural, (a derivative of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural – HMF-1). It shows significant activity on increasing HSP70 mRNA expression, as well as a number of biological activities, including Antioxidant effects, reducing myocardial ischemia and improving blood flow (Ito, 2013).

ETAS® – an extract produced from asparagus. The concentrated power of nature

The soft buds of asparagus are a healthy and nutritious food, often used to prepare gourmet meals, while the woody parts of the stalk are usually discarded. Scientists in Japan have discovered that when properly processed using enzymes and extracting the elements of the discarded part of the rhizome, it exhibits remarkable health properties.

How does ETAS® affect the reduction of stress parameters?

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are intracellular proteins formed as a result of various stress factors, mainly as a result of excessive heat exposure. They help protect and repair the body’s cellular proteins from thermal damage, preventing their deformation and denaturation, as a result of which they would cease to perform their previous functions. It is hypothesized that these proteins are responsible for the anti-stress and anti-aging effects of thermal treatments and spas. The formation of heat shock proteins is also stimulated by exercise and reduced caloric intake, which is known from animal studies to result in increased lifespan (Iguchi, 2012, Calderwood, 2009). Certain HSP proteins (HSP70) directly protect cells from damage that could lead to earlier cell death known as apoptosis. However, the heat shock response declines with age, and the weakened response contributes to aging, allowing the development of diseases that cause protein aggregation (mn. Alzheimer’s disease). This, in turn, leads to decreased cellular viability and reduced longevity (Calderwood, 2009).HSP70 (with a molecular weight of 70,000) induces a number of beneficial physiological effects in the body, including, among others, reduced cell death, anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant activity. The formation of the protein is stimulated by several factors, such as heat, starvation, alcohol consumption and ultraviolet radiation (Doeppner, 2013; Matsuda, 2013; Agaki, 2013). HSP70 protein levels have also been found to decrease with age, which may be related to the minor inflammation that accompanies the aging process (Njemini, 2011).

Information on heat shock proteins – results of studies conducted with ETAS®

In study on sleep-deprived mice ETAS® markedly inhibits the secretion of corticosterone, the stress hormone. Human studies have shown that ETAS® can reduce stress and improve sleep quality. In a study involving 14 healthy volunteers divided into 2 groups, a placebo group and an ETAS® intake group (7 subjects in each group), the ETAS® group consuming 300 mg of ETAS® per day for one week showed a threefold higher expression of HSP70 protein at the mRNA level in white blood cells after consumption than before consumption (Amino Up, sales bulletin, Hokkaido, Japan). In a human clinical trial, a reduction in stress was demonstrated as peripheral blood HSP70 protein levels increased following ETAS® ingestion (Nishira).Another method of testing the effects of ETAS® on stress reduction was to observe its effects on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The observation was made by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) by measuring the acceleration of the pulse wave using the Heart Rate Analyzer Plus TAS9. In the human clinical trial, 30 healthy volunteers were divided into 2 groups, a placebo group and a group taking ETAS®, with 15 subjects in each group. Each group took 400 mg of ETAS® or placebo daily for 4 weeks. The results of the study showed that ETAS® improved the stress response by improving the ANS.

Healthier, longer and deeper sleep with a comprehensive supplement from ETAS®

In those in the receiving group ETAS® sleep problems decreased, as demonstrated in a randomized, double-blind, ETAS® Overview placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted at Hokkaido University of Information Technology. Sixteen healthy male volunteers with sleep problems were given ETAS® at a dose of 300 mg/day. Serum cortisol levels increased by 45% in the placebo group, while the increase in the ETAS® group was only 10% (Amino Up, unpublished study). In the group taking ETAS®, there was an inhibition of cortisol-induced stress in the blood by about 80%. In the ETAS® group, salivary cortisol levels increased by only 47% compared to 75% in the control group. In the ETAS® group, a marker of psychological stress known as chromogranin A decreased 2.5 times more than in the control group.

In order to evaluate the effect of the activity on sleep quality and determine whether the ETAS® will be effective in preventing sleep disorders, an actigraphic analyzer was used in a human clinical trial. Actigraphy allows monitoring of rest and sleep activity cycles using a sensor placed on the patient’s body. Taking ETAS®, which was safe and well tolerated, resulted in a significant improvement in sleep quality. Serum cortisol, salivary cortisol and chromogranin A concentrations decreased, indicating improvement in stress. ETAS® was effective in improving sleep quality and reducing mental stress (Nishira). Another placebo-controlled study evaluating the effect of ETAS® on improving sleep quality used the Athenaeum Insomnia Scale, which measured sleep onset, night and early morning waking, sleep duration, sleep quality, frequency and duration of complaints, stress caused by the experience of insomnia, and interference with daily functioning. The ETAS® group scored 0.40 percentage points higher than the placebo group. Sleep quality and frequency decreased by almost 2 points in the placebo group, but increased by 5.4 points in the ETAS® group.

Improved mood and increased energy – feel better every day with ETAS®

ETAS® effectively reduces fatigue and stress-induced feelings of unhappiness (dysphoria) with as little as 150 mg per day (Waki, 2013). In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial published in Clinical Nutrition “Clinical Nutrition”., 25 healthy volunteers received ETAS® at a dose of 150 mg/day or placebo for a period of 28 days, followed by a 14-day washout period. The study used a questionnaire that asked participants about their energy levels or feelings of fatigue while sitting, and used a memory calculus to elicit psychological stress. Autonomic-neural functions were measured by analysis of heart rate variability using an active orthostatic test. After the memory calculus test, various stress parameters were analyzed, including among others. serum catecholamine hormone levels, sIgA levels (an immune factor in saliva that is reduced by stress), and cortisol levels. It was found that the use of ETAS® for 28 days resulted in an increase in sIgA levels, a reduction in feelings of fatigue in daily life and a decrease in feelings of dysphoria.

Other beneficial effects of ETAS® on physiological functions

ETAS® has a strong beneficial effect on various areas of physiological function. It has anti-inflammatory effects in liver cells by inhibiting nitric oxide production (Nishizawa, et al.). In intestinal epithelial cells, ETAS® reduces cell toxicity and excessive cell proliferation under normal conditions and under oxidative stress. Adding ETAS® to neuronal cell cultures alleviates cellular stress by increasing the expression of HSP70 proteins. Alzheimer’s disease studies found that pretreatment of PC12 nerve cells with ETAS® helped prevent beta amyloid (βA)-induced cell death. ETAS® significantly attenuated βA-induced DNA damage, as well as reduced the production of reactive oxygen species. The results showed that ETAS® has special properties to protect brain cells from damage by increasing the viability of beta-amyloid-treated cells (Ogasawara).

HSP – heat shock proteins maintain normal daily cell homeostasis, protecting their proteins from damage and restoring their normal function. HSP expression is induced to protect cells from stressors. However, HSP’s response to stressors decreases with age.

Folded protein – a properly functioning protein should be folded. HSP repairs misfolded proteins, or breaks them down when the protein is not repairable.

3 x 1 capsule daily.

ETAS® | is a natural ingredient extracted from the tip of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). Asparagus, on the other hand, has been safely consumed by humans for at least 5,000 years.

Regarding the safety of the product, a 90-day toxicology study was conducted, which showed no significant adverse events and confirmed its safety.
